Trivia: Which was invented first? The piano or the organ?
Organs are pictured in mosaics and frescoes from as long ago as the 3rd century BCE.
They are referred to in ancient plays, poems and other literary references.
An organ was discovered with an inscription dating it to 228 CE. It was nearly complete. Only the leather and wood pieces had rotted away. The Aquincum Museum in Budapest has a working replica of it.
The piano was invented in Italy by Bartolomeo Cristofori around the year 1700.
The harpsichord was invented much earlier. There is a drawing of one from around 1430.
By the 1500s variations were being sold in Italy, the Southern Netherlands, France, Germany, England, and Flanders, now Belgium.
