Trivia: What does Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do Mean?
In 1025 Guido of Arezzo invented staff notation. Music had been written before, but this was a better way to write down how music is to be sung.
To make it easier for students to learn the notes, he used the first sounds of the first parts of a song the students were already familiar with. The song was Ut queant laxis or Hymnus in Ioannem, about John the Baptist.
Later, Ut was replaces with Do, because it also taught students to hold the mouth correctly.
Si was replaced with Ti, so that there wouldn’t be two S notes. That way the letters alone could be written to represent notes.
